Questions
Does Muffle work with Google Meet in Chrome?
Yes. Chrome doesn't pass the AirPods mute press to web calls, so Muffle takes it and mutes the microphone itself. The same goes for any call in a browser tab.
Will other people see me as muted?
Your call app may still show your mic as on, because Muffle switches off the microphone rather than the app's button. People hear silence either way. The Muffle icon in the menu bar turns red while you're muted.
Which AirPods work?
AirPods Pro, AirPods 3 and later, and AirPods Max, plus Beats models with call controls. The keyboard shortcut and the menu bar work with any microphone.

Why does Muffle need microphone access?
macOS only passes the AirPods press to apps that are using the microphone, so Muffle keeps a silent connection open during calls. Nothing is recorded.
What happens if I quit Muffle while muted?
Muffle turns your microphone back on when it quits, so you're never stuck silent.
Which macOS versions are supported?
macOS 14 Sonoma and later. The Control Center button needs macOS 26 or later.
Does Muffle have push to talk?
Yes. Choose Push to talk in Settings and hold your shortcut to speak. You can also hold a single key like Right Option or fn, or an extra mouse button.
Why do my AirPods sound worse during calls?
When a call uses the AirPods mic, the AirPods switch to call mode, which plays sound in lower quality. In a quiet room Muffle suggests your Mac's mic instead, so the AirPods keep playing in full quality.
